Pelagic Cormorant look-alikes

Key differences

Brandt's Cormorant is larger and stockier, with a thicker bill. Breeding Brandt's have a distinctive buffy throat patch and a blue gular pouch, which the Pelagic lacks. Non-breeding Brandt's are duller brown overall, lacking the iridescent sheen of Pelagic. Brandt's often forage in larger flocks and prefer shallower waters.

Key differences

Double-crested Cormorant is significantly larger and heavier, with a more robust, orange-yellow bill and gular pouch. It has a more pronounced kink in its neck. While it can be found in marine environments, it is also common in freshwater habitats. It lacks the iridescent plumage and white flank patches of breeding Pelagic Cormorants.

Key differences

The Red-faced Cormorant has a more restricted range (primarily Alaska and Aleutian Islands) and is distinguished by its bright red facial skin (more extensive than Pelagic's), a prominent double crest, and often a white patch on the rump in breeding plumage. It is also generally larger and stockier than the Pelagic Cormorant.
