Biomes
Forests (deciduous, coniferous, mixed), woodlands, suburban areas with mature trees, orchards, parks, and riparian zones.
Geographic range
Widespread across North America, from Alaska and Canada south through the United States and into Central America (Nicaragua). Absent from arid southwestern deserts and parts of the Great Plains.
Preferred environments
Mature forests with standing dead trees or snags, which provide foraging and nesting sites. Also adapts well to human-modified landscapes with sufficient tree cover.
Elevation range
Sea level up to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in mountainous regions.
Where to look
Mature Forests
Look in deciduous, coniferous, or mixed forests with a good presence of older trees and snags (standing dead trees).
Woodlands and Parks
They can be found in suburban woodlands, large parks, and cemeteries that contain mature trees.
Orchards and Riparian Zones
Orchards and areas along rivers and streams with ample tree cover are also good places to find them.
Backyard Feeders
They are frequent visitors to suet feeders, especially during winter months.
Field tips
- Listen for Drumming. Their distinctive drumming is often the first indication of their presence. Listen for a strong, rapid series of taps.
- Look for Foraging Signs. Scan tree trunks and branches for signs of their foraging, such as excavated holes or loose bark. They often work their way up a tree trunk.
- Check Suet Feeders. If you have a suet feeder, especially one placed on a tree trunk, keep an eye out, as they are regular visitors.
- Distinguish from Downy. Always pay close attention to size and bill length when you see a black and white woodpecker to correctly identify it as Hairy or Downy.
Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, though northern populations may undertake short-distance altitudinal or irruptive movements in response to food availability.
