Rufous Piculet song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Rufous Piculet, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The song is a high-pitched, rapid series of 'tsee-tsee-tsee' or 'tsip-tsip-tsip' notes, often delivered in a descending or accelerating fashion. It can be quite subtle and easily overlooked.

Calls

Calls include soft 'tsit' or 'chip' notes, sometimes given in a rapid series. They also produce a soft, rapid drumming sound, often on small, dead branches, which is much quieter than that of larger woodpeckers.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, and particularly during the breeding season.
