European Green Woodpecker song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the European Green Woodpecker, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The most characteristic vocalization is a loud, laughing or 'yaffling' call, often described as 'klyu-klyu-klyu-klyu-klyu'. This call is typically given in a series of 5-10 notes, descending slightly in pitch towards the end. It is often heard in spring and early summer.

Calls

Besides the 'yaffle', it has a sharp 'kyack' or 'kewk' alarm call, and a softer 'chup' contact call. Drumming is infrequent and less powerful than other woodpeckers, usually a short, weak burst.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (late winter to early summer), but can be heard year-round, especially on sunny days.
