Geographic range
Found in the Malay Peninsula (southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia), Sumatra, and Borneo. Subspecies variations exist across this range.
Preferred environments
Prefers primary and mature secondary lowland rainforests with dense undergrowth, often near streams or damp areas. Requires a thick leaf litter layer for foraging.

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 600 meters (occasionally up to 1000 meters) in elevation.

Primary Rainforests
Best found in undisturbed, mature lowland rainforests with a dense understory and rich leaf litter.
Secondary Forests
Can also be found in well-developed secondary forests, especially those adjacent to primary forest patches.
Protected Areas
National parks and wildlife reserves in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo offer the best chances, such as Taman Negara (Malaysia) or Danum Valley (Borneo).
Field tips
- Listen for Calls. Pittas are often heard before they are seen. Learn their distinctive 'taw-whit' whistle and listen carefully, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Patience and Stealth. These are shy birds. Move slowly and quietly through suitable habitat, and be prepared to wait patiently in one spot. They often freeze when they detect movement.
- Focus on the Forest Floor. Since they are ground-foragers, keep your eyes peeled on the leaf litter and dense undergrowth. They often hop out briefly into clearer patches before retreating.
- Follow Guides. Local bird guides often know specific territories or reliable spots where these elusive birds have been seen.
