Where does the Crimson Rosella live?

The Crimson Rosella lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Temperate forests, woodlands, open forests, rainforest edges, riparian vegetation, parks, and gardens.

Geographic range

Eastern and south-eastern Australia, including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and south-eastern South Australia. Also introduced to Norfolk Island and New Zealand.

Preferred environments

Prefers tall eucalypt forests and woodlands, particularly those with a dense understory. Also common in urban parks and gardens with mature trees, especially where food sources like seeds and fruits are abundant.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) in mountainous regions.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for Calls. Their distinctive fluting whistles and sharp contact calls are often the first indication of their presence, especially when they are hidden in foliage.
2. Look in Tree Canopies. They frequently forage in the upper canopy of eucalypt trees for seeds and nectar. Use binoculars to scan the treetops.
3. Check for Fallen Seeds. Crimson Rosellas also forage on the ground for fallen seeds. Look for them in grassy areas beneath eucalypt trees.
4. Visit Parks Early/Late. They are most active during the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late afternoon, making these the best times for observation in urban settings.

Migration

Generally sedentary, remaining in their breeding territories year-round. Some local movements may occur in response to food availability, particularly in mountainous areas where they may move to lower altitudes during winter.
