African Harrier-Hawk look-alikes

Key differences

The Madagascar Harrier-Hawk is endemic to Madagascar and is very similar in appearance. The key difference is that P. radiatus has more extensive black barring on the belly and undertail coverts, and the white tail band is often narrower or less distinct. Its geographic range is entirely separate.

Key differences

While also a raptor, the Western Marsh Harrier has a more slender build, longer wings, and a different flight profile (wings held in a strong dihedral). Its plumage is predominantly brown with lighter underparts, lacking the distinctive grey and black pattern and bare facial patch of the African Harrier-Hawk. Marsh Harriers are typically found in wetlands, whereas the African Harrier-Hawk prefers woodlands and savannas.
