Where does the Palm Cockatoo live?

The Palm Cockatoo lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, lowland rainforests, monsoon forests, gallery forests, and sometimes adjacent savanna woodlands.

Geographic range

New Guinea (including West Papua, Papua New Guinea), Aru Islands (Indonesia), and the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland, Australia.

Preferred environments

Tall, mature forests, particularly those with large, old trees suitable for nesting hollows and a good supply of large, hard-shelled nuts.

Elevation range

Primarily lowlands, from sea level up to approximately 1300 meters (4265 feet).

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for Calls. Their loud, distinctive calls often give away their presence before they are seen. Listen for the guttural 'raah' or the unique drumming sound.
2. Scan Tree Canopies. They spend most of their time in the upper canopy. Use binoculars to scan the tops of large trees, especially those with fruiting or seeding bodies.
3. Look for Feeding Sign. Look for discarded fragments of large nuts or fruits on the forest floor, which can indicate their recent presence.
4. Early Morning/Late Afternoon. These are the most active times for feeding and vocalizing. They may be seen flying to or from roosting sites.
5. Patience and Stealth. Palm Cockatoos can be shy and wary. Approach quietly and be prepared to wait patiently for them to appear or become active.

Migration

Resident throughout its range; no significant migratory movements. They may undertake local movements in response to food availability.
