Birds to compare

Timneh African Grey Parrot

Psittacus timneh

Key differences

Formerly considered a subspecies (P. erithacus timneh), now recognized as a distinct species. The Timneh Grey is smaller, has a darker, duller maroon tail (not bright red), and a horn-colored upper mandible with a black tip (compared to the all-black beak of the Congo African Grey). Its range is restricted to West Africa (Guinea-Bissau to Côte d'Ivoire).

Red-tailed Parrot

Psittacus erythacus (juvenile)

Key differences

While not a distinct species, juvenile African Grey Parrots can sometimes be confused with adults due to their similar overall grey plumage. However, juveniles have a darker, duller red tail (often with grey tips) and dark irises, which distinguish them from the bright red tail and pale yellow irises of mature adults.
