Geographic range
From southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Veracruz) through Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama) and extensively across South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.
Preferred environments
Dense primary and mature secondary forests, often near water sources. They require large trees for roosting and nesting.

Typically from sea level up to 1500 m (4900 ft), occasionally higher up to 2000 m (6500 ft).
Where to look
Primary and Secondary Rainforests
Focus on areas with tall, mature trees and dense canopy cover. They prefer undisturbed forest but can be found in mature secondary growth.
Gallery Forests
Check forests along rivers and streams, as these often provide suitable habitat and prey.
Protected Areas and National Parks
Many national parks and reserves within its range offer excellent opportunities, as these areas preserve large tracts of suitable habitat.
Field tips
- Nocturnal Observation. As a strictly nocturnal owl, the best time to find them is after dusk or before dawn. Use a red-filtered flashlight to minimize disturbance.
- Listen for Calls. Their distinctive hooting call is often the first indication of their presence. Learn to recognize it, especially during the breeding season.
- Look for Roosts. During the day, they roost quietly in dense foliage, often close to the trunk of a large tree. Look for whitewash (droppings) or pellets on the ground beneath potential roosting sites.
- Check for Juveniles. If you find an adult, look for a white, dark-faced juvenile nearby, especially several months after the breeding season.
