Geographic range
Endemic to southern Africa, primarily found in South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and eastern Zimbabwe.
Preferred environments
Prefers areas with scattered trees, shrubs, and open grassy patches. Highly adaptable to human-modified landscapes, including urban and suburban gardens with suitable vegetation.

Where to look
Gardens and Parks
Common in suburban and urban gardens, especially those with native plants, seed-bearing flowers, and bird feeders.
Fynbos and Montane Grasslands
Abundant in natural fynbos vegetation and open montane grasslands, particularly in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa.
Agricultural Areas
Can be found in cultivated lands and orchards, especially where weeds and seed-bearing plants are present.
Field tips
- Listen for the Song. The Cape Canary's distinctive song is often the first indication of its presence. Males frequently sing from prominent perches.
- Check Seed Sources. Look for them foraging on the ground or clinging to seed heads of grasses and flowering plants. They are particularly fond of thistle seeds.
- Visit Bird Feeders. They are regular visitors to bird feeders offering mixed seeds, especially sunflower seeds and nyjer.
- Observe in Pairs or Small Flocks. While breeding, they are often in pairs. Outside breeding, they may form small, active flocks.
Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, but some local movements may occur in response to food availability or harsh weather conditions, particularly at higher altitudes.
