Several birds can be mistaken for the American Redstart. Compare the key differences below to confirm your sighting.

Birds to compare

Orchard Oriole

Icterus spurius

Key differences

While adult male Orchard Orioles are also black and orange, their orange is a richer chestnut, not the bright fiery orange of the Redstart. Orioles are larger, have thicker, more pointed bills, and lack the distinct orange wing and tail patches of the Redstart. Their foraging behavior is also different, with orioles typically gleaning and probing rather than flycatching with tail fanning.

Black-and-white Warbler

Mniotilta varia

Key differences

Both are active warblers, but the Black-and-white Warbler is distinctly striped in black and white and creeps along tree trunks and branches like a nuthatch, a behavior not seen in the American Redstart. The Redstart's bright orange/yellow patches are absent on the Black-and-white Warbler.

Hooded Warbler

Setophaga citrina

Key differences

Male Hooded Warblers are bright yellow with a black hood and throat. While they share the active foraging style and some habitat preferences, their plumage is entirely different, lacking the orange/yellow wing and tail patches of the Redstart.
