Where does the White-breasted Nuthatch live?

The White-breasted Nuthatch lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Temperate forests, woodlands, suburban parks, and orchards.

Geographic range

Widespread across North America, from southern Canada through the United States and into central Mexico. Absent from the extreme southeastern U.S. coastal plain and parts of the Great Plains.

Preferred environments

Mature deciduous or mixed forests with large, old trees, particularly those with rough bark for foraging and cavities for nesting. They favor oak, hickory, and pine forests.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), depending on the region and availability of suitable forest habitat.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look Up and Down. Scan tree trunks and large branches, paying close attention to birds moving both up and down, especially headfirst.
2. Listen for Calls. Their loud, nasal 'yank-yank' call is often the first indication of their presence, even before you see them.
3. Check Bird Feeders. They are frequent visitors to feeders offering sunflower seeds (especially black oil sunflower) and suet, particularly in winter.
4. Observe Foraging. Watch for them probing bark crevices for insects or wedging seeds into bark to crack them open.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, though some northern populations may make short-distance, irregular movements south during harsh winters or in response to food shortages (irruptions).
