Where does the Hottentot Teal live?

The Hottentot Teal lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Wetlands, freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes, swamps, and slow-moving rivers.

Geographic range

Sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Ethiopia south to South Africa, and Madagascar. It is largely absent from the arid regions of the Sahara and Namib deserts.

Preferred environments

Prefers shallow, well-vegetated freshwater bodies with emergent vegetation (reeds, sedges) and floating plants. It avoids fast-flowing rivers and large, open water bodies.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters, though occasionally higher in some parts of its range.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Be Patient and Quiet. Hottentot Teals are often shy and can be easily overlooked in dense vegetation. Approach quietly and scan carefully.
2. Use Optics. Binoculars or a spotting scope are essential to observe the fine details of their plumage, especially the head pattern and bill color.
3. Look for Movement. Watch for subtle movements in the reeds or emergent vegetation, as they often feed by dabbling with only their rear end visible.
4. Listen for Calls. Their soft calls can sometimes give away their presence before they are seen.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, but can be locally nomadic in response to rainfall and water availability, especially in arid regions. Some populations undertake short-distance movements.
