Geographic range
Historically widespread across northern Venezuela, Trinidad, and parts of Colombia. Currently, fragmented populations exist primarily in northern Venezuela (especially Lara, Falcón, and Anzoátegui states) and a reintroduced population in Trinidad.
Preferred environments
Prefers open woodlands, clearings, and areas with a mix of trees and shrubs, particularly those producing small seeds. Often found near human settlements and agricultural lands where food sources are abundant.
Elevation range
Typically found from sea level up to 1,200 meters (occasionally higher, up to 1,500 meters).
Where to look
Dry Forests and Woodlands
Focus on areas with deciduous trees and open understory, particularly in the states of Lara, Falcón, and Anzoátegui in Venezuela.
Forest Edges and Clearings
These birds often prefer the interface between dense forest and more open areas, where food plants are abundant.
Cultivated Areas
Look in agricultural lands with scattered trees and shrubs, as they can adapt to human-modified landscapes if suitable food sources are present.
Reintroduction Sites
In Trinidad, focus on the reintroduction sites where conservation efforts are underway, such as the Asa Wright Nature Centre and other protected areas.
Field tips
- Timing. Best observed during the early morning or late afternoon when they are most active in foraging and vocalizing.
- Patience and Stealth. Red Siskins can be shy and easily disturbed. Move slowly and quietly, and use binoculars for distant observation.
- Listen for Calls. Their distinctive calls and songs are often the first indication of their presence, especially in dense foliage.
- Look for Food Sources. Focus on areas with abundant seed-bearing plants, especially composites and grasses, which are their primary food sources.
- Conservation Awareness. Due to their critically endangered status, any sightings should be reported to local conservation authorities or eBird to contribute to monitoring efforts. Avoid disturbing them.
