Key differences

Chipping Sparrows also have a rusty cap, but they lack the central breast spot and the bicolored bill (their bill is entirely dark or pinkish-gray). They also have a prominent white supercilium (eyebrow stripe) and a black eye-line, which the American Tree Sparrow lacks. Chipping Sparrows are generally smaller and have a clearer, unstreaked breast.

Despite the similar name, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow is a true sparrow (family Passeridae) and looks quite different. It has a chestnut crown, a black cheek patch, and a black bib, lacking the rusty eye-line and central breast spot of the American Tree Sparrow. Its bill is entirely dark.
