Where does the Cravina live?

The Cravina lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Grasslands, savannas, open fields, pastures, agricultural areas, and marsh edges.

Geographic range

Primarily central and southeastern Brazil (from Goiás and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes). There are also isolated records from Bolivia and Uruguay.

Preferred environments

Prefers tall, undisturbed grasslands with abundant seeding grasses, often near water sources such as marshes, ponds, or rivers. Also found in disturbed areas like pastures and agricultural fields, especially those with native grass patches.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 1,000 meters (3,300 feet).

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for the Song. The male's song is often the first indication of its presence. Learn to recognize it to locate individuals, especially in dense grass.
2. Scan Grass Tops. Males often perch conspicuously on the tops of tall grass stems or low shrubs to sing and survey their territory. Use binoculars to scan these areas.
3. Be Patient and Observe. These are small, often secretive birds. Patience is key. Once located, observe their feeding behavior and movements within the grass.
4. Visit During Breeding Season. Males are most vocal and conspicuous during the breeding season (austral spring/summer), making them easier to find.

Migration

Considered a partial migrant or austral migrant. Populations in the southern parts of its range (e.g., southern Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay) may move north during the austral winter, while northern populations may be more resident or undertake local movements.
