Where does the Freckled Duck live?

The Freckled Duck lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Freshwater wetlands, swamps, floodplains, lignum swamps, temporary and permanent lakes, and dams.

Geographic range

Endemic to Australia, primarily found in the Murray-Darling Basin in southeastern Australia, and also in the southwest of Western Australia. Its distribution is highly nomadic and dependent on rainfall and water availability.

Preferred environments

Prefers shallow, freshwater wetlands with dense emergent and submerged vegetation, such as sedges, rushes, and lignum. It favors areas with still or slow-moving water, often with a muddy substrate, where it can filter-feed effectively. During droughts, it congregates on larger, more permanent water bodies.

Elevation range

Typically found in low-lying areas, from sea level up to a few hundred meters.

Field tips

1. Patience and Stealth. Freckled Ducks are often shy and secretive. Approach wetlands quietly and use binoculars or a spotting scope to scan vegetated areas.
2. Look for Filter-Feeding. Observe their characteristic feeding behavior, dabbling at the surface or submerging their head and neck to filter food from the water.
3. Check Bill Color. During the breeding season (opportunistic, but often spring/early summer), look for the distinctive red basal patch on the male's bill.
4. Scan Dense Vegetation. They often hide among reeds, sedges, and lignum, so carefully scan these areas, especially at dawn and dusk.
5. Consult Local Birding Resources. Check recent sightings and local birding reports for current locations, especially during periods of high water or drought.

Migration

Highly nomadic rather than migratory. Movements are largely irruptive and driven by rainfall patterns and the availability of suitable wetland habitats. They disperse widely after good rains and concentrate on drought refugia during dry spells.
