Where does the African Mourning Dove live?

Savanna, open woodland, scrubland, cultivated areas, riparian zones.

Geographic range

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Mauritania east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to Angola, northern Namibia, Botswana, and northern South Africa.

Preferred environments

Favors areas with scattered trees, bushes, and open ground for foraging, especially near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and watering holes. Often found in human-modified landscapes like farmlands and gardens.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to 2,000 meters, occasionally higher.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for the Call. Its distinctive mournful cooing is often heard before the bird is seen. Learn to recognize this call.
2. Check Water Sources. Visit watering holes or riverbanks in the early morning or late afternoon, as they frequently come to drink.
3. Scan Open Ground. They are primarily ground feeders, so look for them foraging on open ground, especially under trees or near cultivated fields.
4. Look in Trees and Bushes. While they feed on the ground, they often perch in trees or bushes, especially during the hotter parts of the day or when resting.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, but some local movements may occur in response to food availability or water scarcity, particularly in arid regions. Not considered a long-distance migrant.
