African Collared Dove look-alikes

Key differences

The Eurasian Collared Dove is generally larger and greyer overall, lacking the distinct rosy or pinkish wash on the head and breast of the African Collared Dove. Its undertail coverts are grey, not white. The call of the Eurasian Collared Dove is a three-note 'hoo-HOO-hoo', with the middle note emphasized, but often sounds more like 'coo-COO-coo' similar to the African Collared Dove, making vocal identification tricky without experience. In areas of overlap or introduction, hybridization can occur, making identification even more challenging.

Key differences

The Ringneck Dove is the domesticated form of the African Collared Dove. While genetically identical, domestic Ringneck Doves often exhibit a wider range of color mutations (e.g., white, fawn) and are typically tamer. Wild African Collared Doves are generally more uniform in their pale sandy-buff plumage. Escaped domestic birds can establish feral populations and interbreed with wild African Collared Doves.

Key differences

The Red-eyed Dove is significantly larger and darker, with a more rufous-brown plumage and a prominent red eye-ring. Its black collar is also more extensive. Its call is a deeper, more resonant 'coo-COO-coo-coo'.
