Garden Warbler song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Garden Warbler, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

A rich, fluid, and melodious warble, often described as 'babbling' or 'gurgling', without harsh notes or distinct phrases. It is typically delivered rapidly and continuously, often from within dense cover, making the bird difficult to spot. It lacks the scratchy notes of the Blackcap or the repetitive phrases of other warblers.

Calls

A soft, rather dry 'chek' or 'tack', sometimes repeated. Also a low, churring alarm call.

When they vocalize

Males sing frequently during the breeding season, primarily from April to July, often from concealed perches within dense vegetation. Calls are given year-round, especially when alarmed or communicating with a mate.
