Black Grouse look-alikes

Key differences

Male Capercaillie is much larger (up to 90 cm length, 4 kg weight), has a rounded tail (not lyre-shaped), and a more robust, hooked beak. Its plumage is darker, often with green iridescence on the breast. Female Capercaillie is also larger than female Black Grouse, with a more rufous-brown plumage and a distinct pale patch on the shoulder.

Key differences

Hazel Grouse is significantly smaller (35-39 cm). Males have a small crest and a black throat patch bordered by white. Both sexes have a distinctive barred tail with a broad black subterminal band and a white tip. They prefer denser forest habitats.

Key differences

Willow Ptarmigan is smaller (35-43 cm) and undergoes dramatic seasonal plumage changes, turning mostly white in winter. In summer, it is rufous-brown with white wings and belly. It lacks the lyre-shaped tail of the male Black Grouse and the distinct barring of the female.
