Calls

The most characteristic call is a harsh, grating 'kirr-ik' or 'kerr-ick', often repeated. Also gives a sharper 'kip' or 'kvit' call, especially when alarmed or in flight. Calls are loud and distinctive, particularly in breeding colonies.

Most vocal during the breeding season, especially within colonies, and during foraging or migration when communicating with flock members.
