Gartered Trogon look-alikes

Key differences

The Gartered Trogon (male) has a bright yellow orbital ring and a white breast band. The male Collared Trogon has a red orbital ring and a white breast band that is often broader and more prominent, sometimes with a black line above it. Females are harder to distinguish, but female Collared Trogons often have a more reddish-brown wash on the face and breast, and a redder belly.

Key differences

Slaty-tailed Trogons are significantly larger (30-33 cm) than Gartered Trogons. Males have a red bill and a more uniform green body without a distinct white breast band. Females are also larger and have a red bill, lacking the gray breast of the female Gartered Trogon.

The Black-headed Trogon (male) has a black head and upper breast, contrasting sharply with a white breast band and yellow belly. The Gartered Trogon (male) has an iridescent green head and upper breast and a red belly. Females are also distinct, with the female Black-headed Trogon having a dark gray head and breast and a yellow belly.
