Biomes
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical and tropical moist montane forests, secondary forests, forest edges, and mature woodlands.
Geographic range
Southeastern Brazil (from Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina (Misiones province).
Preferred environments
Prefers the mid-story and understory of humid broadleaf forests, often near clearings or along forest edges. Can adapt to disturbed forests and even well-wooded suburban areas.
Elevation range
Typically found from sea level up to 1,800 meters (5,900 feet).
Where to look
Atlantic Forest remnants
Protected areas and national parks within the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina are prime locations.
Forest edges and clearings
Often found at the edges of dense forest, where they can access both insects and fruits, and where light penetration is better.
Well-wooded suburban areas
In some parts of its range, it can be found in mature gardens and parks with ample tree cover.
Field tips
- Listen for calls. Their distinctive song is often the easiest way to locate them. Once heard, try to pinpoint the direction and scan the mid-story.
- Scan the mid-story. Trogons tend to perch motionless for long periods. Use binoculars to carefully scan branches and foliage in the middle layers of the forest.
- Look for movement. While often still, they will occasionally sally out to catch an insect or pluck a fruit. Watch for these brief movements.
- Patience is key. Trogons are notoriously difficult to spot due to their cryptic behavior. Be patient and persistent.

Resident throughout its range; no significant migratory movements are known.
