Biomes

Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, scrublands, open woodlands, agricultural areas, gardens, and urban parks.

Geographic range

Widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Preferred environments

Areas with dense undergrowth, thorny bushes, scattered trees, and human-modified landscapes like gardens and cultivated fields. They avoid dense, unbroken forest.

Where to look

Gardens and Parks

Common in suburban and urban gardens, especially those with dense shrubbery and trees.

Agricultural Areas

Frequently found in cultivated fields, orchards, and plantations with scattered trees and bushes.

Scrublands and Open Woodlands

Abundant in dry scrub forests, thorny thickets, and open deciduous woodlands.

Roadsides and Edges

Often seen along roadsides, forest edges, and disturbed habitats where there is sufficient cover.

Field tips

  1. Listen for their calls. Their noisy chattering is often the first indication of their presence. Follow the sound to locate the group.
  2. Look for movement in dense cover. They prefer to stay hidden in bushes and undergrowth. Watch for rustling leaves or subtle movements.
  3. Observe group dynamics. Since they are always in groups, look for multiple birds moving together. They often follow a leader.
  4. Be patient and quiet. While noisy, they can be wary. Approach slowly and quietly to get a good view without disturbing them.
  5. Check ground level. They spend a lot of time foraging on the ground, so focus your search in low vegetation.

Migration

Resident throughout its range; non-migratory.
