Field tips
- Listen for Calls. Its distinctive cooing call is often the first indication of its presence. Listen for it in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Check Open Ground. Zenaida Doves primarily forage on the ground for seeds. Look for them walking and pecking in open areas, lawns, or under feeders.
- Look in Trees/Shrubs. They often perch in trees or shrubs, especially during the heat of the day or when roosting. Check for their silhouette against the sky.
- Visit Water Sources. Like most doves, they need to drink regularly. Look for them near ponds, bird baths, or other water sources, especially in dry periods.
- Be Patient and Quiet. While often approachable, sudden movements can flush them. Move slowly and quietly to observe their natural behavior.
Migration
Primarily resident throughout its range. Some local movements may occur in response to food availability or during severe weather events, but it is not considered a migratory species.
