Geographic range

East Asia, including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and parts of Southeast Asia. Introduced to Hawaii.

Preferred environments

Prefers open woodlands, forest edges, secondary growth, orchards, and well-vegetated suburban gardens. It is highly adaptable to human-modified landscapes.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 2,000 meters, occasionally higher in some regions.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look for movement in foliage. These birds are constantly on the move, so scan trees and shrubs for small, flitting birds. Their active nature often gives them away.
2. Listen for their song and calls. Their distinctive warbling song and high-pitched contact calls are often the first indication of their presence, especially when they are hidden in dense foliage.
3. Visit flowering plants. During blooming seasons, check flowering trees and shrubs, as they are often attracted to nectar. They may hover briefly while feeding.
4. Observe flocks. Outside the breeding season, they are usually found in active flocks. Look for a group of small, olive-green birds moving together.

Migration

Resident in much of its range, but northern populations (e.g., in northern Japan and mainland China) are migratory, moving south for the winter. Some populations exhibit altitudinal migration.
