Adult male: Forehead, crown, and nape iridescent metallic green. Mantle, back, and rump deep crimson. Uppertail-coverts iridescent metallic blue. Wings dark brown. Tail black with metallic blue sheen, central tail feathers elongated and pointed. Underparts crimson, becoming olive-yellow on belly and vent. Dark brown
Warna kaki

Ciri pembeda
Males are unmistakable with their brilliant crimson and metallic green. Females are more subtly colored but can be identified by their small size, slender decurved bill, and active feeding behavior. The elongated central tail feathers of the male are a key feature.
Penampilan muda
Juveniles resemble adult females, but are generally duller and more uniformly olive-green, often with a yellowish wash on the underparts. Young males gradually acquire patches of crimson and iridescent green as they mature.
Perubahan musiman
No significant seasonal plumage changes. Breeding and non-breeding plumages are essentially the same for both sexes.
Dimorfisme seksual
Highly sexually dimorphic. Males are much more brightly colored with iridescent crimson and metallic green, and possess elongated central tail feathers. Females are duller, predominantly olive-green and yellowish, lacking the bright iridescence and elongated tail feathers.

Cara identifikasi

  1. 1

    Male Plumage

Look for the striking combination of iridescent metallic green on the crown/nape and deep crimson on the back and underparts. The elongated central tail feathers are diagnostic.

  2. 2

    Female Plumage

Observe the overall olive-green upperparts and dull yellowish-olive underparts. Note the lack of bright colors and elongated tail feathers. The slender, decurved bill is key.

  3. 3

    Bill Shape

Both sexes possess a long, thin, and distinctly decurved black bill, perfectly adapted for nectar feeding.

  4. 4

    Behavior

Watch for their active, darting movements, often hovering briefly at flowers. They are constantly on the move.

  5. 5

    Vocalizations

Listen for their high-pitched, rapid 'chip-chip-chip' songs and sharp 'chip' calls.

Habitat dan persebaran

Bioma
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, mangroves, secondary growth, plantations, gardens, parks.
Persebaran geografis
Indian subcontinent (parts of India, Bangladesh), Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines).
Rentang ketinggian
Sea level up to 1,500 meters (occasionally higher in some regions).
Lingkungan yang disukai
Areas with abundant flowering plants, including forest edges, clearings, cultivated areas, orchards, and urban gardens. They are highly adaptable to human-modified landscapes.

Perilaku

Waktu aktivitas
Diurnal, most active during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.
Kebiasaan makan
Primarily feeds on nectar, hovering or perching to probe flowers with its long bill and tubular tongue. Also gleans small insects and spiders from foliage and bark, and occasionally catches insects in flight. They are important pollinators for many plant species.
Perilaku sosial
Typically seen singly or in pairs. May gather in small groups at abundant food sources. Generally not highly social outside of breeding pairs.
Pola terbang
Rapid, direct, and often darting flight, characterized by quick wing beats. They can hover briefly in front of flowers.
Pola migrasi
Resident throughout its range, with no significant migratory movements. Local movements may occur in response to flowering seasons.
Teritorialitas
Males can be territorial, especially during the breeding season, defending feeding territories and nesting sites from rivals.

Kicauan dan suara

A rapid, high-pitched, and often jumbled series of 'chip-chip-chip' notes, sometimes interspersed with trills and whistles. It can be quite energetic and varied.

Varies geographically, generally March to August in most parts of its range, but can occur year-round in some tropical areas.
Kebiasaan bersarang
The female builds a small, purse-shaped or pear-shaped nest suspended from a branch or vine, often in a sheltered location. It is constructed from fine grass, plant fibers, cobwebs, and lichen, lined with soft materials like feathers or plant down. The entrance is typically on the side.

Di mana ditemukan

Gardens and Parks

Common in urban and suburban areas with flowering plants, especially those with hibiscus, ixora, and other nectar-rich flowers.

Forest Edges and Clearings

Frequently found at the interface between forests and open areas, where flowering shrubs and trees are abundant.

Plantations and Orchards

Often seen in agricultural areas with flowering crops or fruit trees.

Mangrove Forests

Present in coastal mangrove habitats, feeding on mangrove flowers.

Tips lapangan

  1. Look for flowering plants. Focus your search on areas with abundant flowers, as they are primary nectar feeders. They are often attracted to red or orange flowers.
  2. Listen for calls. Their high-pitched calls can often betray their presence before you see them, especially when they are hidden in dense foliage.
  3. Observe active feeding. Watch for small, fast-moving birds hovering or perching at flowers, probing with their long bills.
  4. Be patient and still. Sunbirds are often quite bold but can be skittish. Remaining still and observing quietly will increase your chances of a good view.

Spesies serupa

Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker

Dicaeum cruentatum

Smaller, much shorter bill, lacks the elongated tail feathers of the male Crimson Sunbird. The red on the male Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker is restricted to the back, not extending to the underparts like the Crimson Sunbird.

Van Hasselt's Sunbird

Leptocoma brasiliana

Males have a purplish-red breast and belly, contrasting with a metallic green throat and upperparts, rather than the extensive crimson of the Crimson Sunbird. Females are very similar but often have a more distinct yellow vent.

Olive-backed Sunbird

Cinnyris jugularis

Males have a metallic blue-black throat and breast, with a yellow belly, lacking the crimson. Females are generally duller yellow below with olive upperparts, but lack the distinct yellowish wash on the rump often seen in female Crimson Sunbirds.
