Burung mirip Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker

Key differences

The Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (D. cruentatum) has a red back, but its head is black, not red. The red on its back extends further down, and it lacks the red central stripe on the underparts that is characteristic of the male Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker. Females are also different, with D. cruentatum females having a red rump patch.

Key differences

The Orange-bellied Flowerpecker (D. trigonostigma) has an orange belly and a blue-grey head, which clearly distinguishes it from the Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker. Its back is olive-green, not red or blue-black.

The Plain Flowerpecker (D. minullum) is much duller, lacking any bright red or blue-black plumage. It is uniformly olive-green above and pale yellowish below, making it easily distinguishable from the vibrant male Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker. Females of D. trochileum have a more distinct yellowish rump and often a reddish wash on the crown, which D. minullum lacks.
