Key differences

The Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus) is generally duller yellow-green on the upperparts and has a more extensive yellow throat and breast, but lacks the overall bright yellow plumage of Z. flavus. Its underparts are often whitish or greyish, contrasting with the bright yellow belly of Z. flavus. Z. palpebrosus also has a much wider distribution across Asia, while Z. flavus is restricted to Java.

Key differences

The Lemon-bellied White-eye (Zosterops chloris) is found on other Indonesian islands (e.g., Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi) but not typically on Java where Z. flavus occurs. Z. chloris is generally greener on the back and wings, with a more greenish-yellow belly, and its yellow is not as intense or widespread as in Z. flavus. The eye-ring of Z. chloris can also be narrower.
