Dove guardare

Wetlands and Marshes

Search in extensive freshwater wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes with abundant emergent vegetation.

River Valleys

Look along slow-moving rivers and their floodplains, especially those with adjacent grasslands.

Agricultural Fields

During migration and winter, they may be found grazing in agricultural fields, particularly those with cereal crops or stubble, often near water sources.

Protected Areas

Focus on nature reserves and protected wetland areas within their breeding and wintering ranges, as wild populations are very scarce.

Consigli sul campo

  1. Timing. Best observed during migration periods (spring and autumn) when they form larger, more visible flocks, or during the breeding season in their specific breeding grounds.
  2. Binoculars/Scope. Due to their wary nature and often distant presence, good quality binoculars or a spotting scope are essential for detailed observation and identification.
  3. Listen for Calls. Their distinctive trumpet-like honk can often be heard before the birds are seen, especially when they are flying overhead or in dense vegetation.
  4. Observe Flocks. While breeding pairs are solitary, outside the breeding season, look for them within mixed flocks of other goose species, though they often form their own cohesive groups.
  5. Conservation Awareness. Given their endangered status, observe from a respectful distance to avoid disturbance, especially during breeding.

Migrazione

Migratory. Breeds in northern parts of its range and migrates south to warmer wintering grounds in central and eastern China, Korea, and Japan. Migration occurs in autumn (September-October) and spring (March-April).
