Key differences

The Great-tailed Grackle's range overlaps with the Boat-tailed Grackle along the southeastern US coast and Gulf Coast. Boat-tailed Grackles are generally larger, especially males, with an even longer, more pronounced keel-shaped tail. Males of both species are iridescent black, but Boat-tailed Grackles typically have dark eyes across their range, while Great-tailed Grackles can have pale yellow eyes in many populations. Female Boat-tailed Grackles are usually darker and more uniformly sooty brown than female Great-tailed Grackles, which often have a paler throat/breast. Vocalizations also differ, with Boat-tailed Grackles having a more nasal, 'jeeb-jeeb' call.

Common Grackles are smaller than Great-tailed Grackles and have a shorter, less pronounced keel-shaped tail. Their iridescence is typically more purplish-bronze on the body and greenish on the head, rather than the blue-purple of the Great-tailed. Common Grackles always have pale yellow eyes. Common Grackle calls are typically harsher and more metallic, often described as a 'rusty gate' sound, but distinct from the Great-tailed's repertoire.

Their calls are simpler, often a 'check' or 'k-seee' note.
