Uccelli da confrontare

Sandhill Crane

Antigone canadensis

Key differences

Sandhill Cranes are smaller and gray-bodied, lacking the pure white plumage of the Whooping Crane. They have a red crown, but it is less extensive and often appears more brick-red than the Whooping Crane's bright red. In flight, Sandhill Cranes show gray primaries, not black. Their call is a rattling, trumpeting sound, distinct from the Whooping Crane's bugle.

Snow Goose

Anser caerulescens

Key differences

While also white with black wingtips, Snow Geese are much smaller, have shorter necks and legs, and a different body shape. They fly in V-formations and have a distinctive 'honking' call, unlike the crane's bugle. Snow Geese also have a 'grinning patch' on their bill, which Whooping Cranes lack.

Great Egret

Ardea alba

Key differences

Great Egrets are entirely white but are significantly smaller and more slender than Whooping Cranes. They have yellow bills and black legs, and fly with their necks S-curved, unlike the extended neck of a crane. Egrets are typically found in shallower water and have a different foraging style.
