Key differences

The male American Wigeon has a white crown and a green patch behind the eye, contrasting with the Eurasian Wigeon's creamy-yellow crown and chestnut head. Females are very similar, but American Wigeons often show a darker head and a more reddish-brown flank. The call of the American Wigeon is a three-note whistle, but typically sounds more like 'whew-whew-whew' or 'whoo-whoo-whoo' and is less clear than the Eurasian Wigeon's.

Key differences

Both sexes of Gadwall are generally grey-brown, lacking the strong color patterns of the male Eurasian Wigeon. Gadwalls have a white speculum (wing patch) but it is bordered by black, unlike the Eurasian Wigeon's solid white patch. Gadwalls also have a black bill, not pale blue-grey.
