Canto

The most iconic vocalization is the 'gobble' of the male, a loud, resonant, and far-carrying call used to attract females and announce presence to rivals. It's a series of rapid, guttural notes: 'gobble-obble-obble-obble'.

Richiami

Hens produce a variety of calls, including 'yelps' (a series of clear, high-pitched notes, 'yelp-yelp-yelp') to communicate with other turkeys, 'clucks' (short, sharp notes) for general communication, and 'putts' (alarm calls). Both sexes make 'purrs' (soft, rolling sounds) when content. Poults make 'peeps' and 'lost calls'.

Quando vocalizzano

Males gobble most frequently at dawn and dusk, and throughout the morning during the breeding season (spring). Hens vocalize year-round, with increased calling during nesting and brood-rearing. Alarm calls can be heard anytime danger is perceived.
