Key differences

Males of Saxicola maurus typically have a more extensive white rump patch (often visible in flight), and the white neck patch extends further onto the side of the neck, sometimes forming a complete collar. The orange on the breast is often brighter and more restricted. Females are generally paler and less rufous than European Stonechat females. Identification can be challenging where ranges overlap, and some authorities consider them conspecific.

Key differences

Whinchats (Saxicola rubetra) are slightly larger and more upright. Males have a prominent white supercilium (eyebrow stripe), a dark cheek patch, and a streaky brown back, lacking the solid black head and white half-collar of the European Stonechat. Their breast is orange-buff, but less intensely colored than a male Stonechat. They also have a white patch at the base of the tail, visible in flight. Females are duller but retain the distinct supercilium.
