Uccelli da confrontare

Collared Dove

Streptopelia decaocto

Key differences

The Collared Dove is larger, paler, and lacks the rufous-brown scaling on the back and wings. It has a distinct black half-collar on the nape (not striped) and a different, more monotonous 'coo-COO-coo' call. Its tail is also less distinctly white-tipped. Collared Doves are also resident in much of Europe, unlike the migratory Turtle Dove.

Stock Dove

Columba oenas

Key differences

The Stock Dove is a true pigeon, larger and stockier than the Turtle Dove. It is generally grey with iridescent green and purple patches on the neck, but lacks any black and white neck patch or rufous scaling. It has dark eyes and two indistinct black wing bars. Its call is a deep, booming 'hoo-hoo-hoo'.

Oriental Turtle Dove

Streptopelia orientalis

Key differences

The Oriental Turtle Dove is very similar but generally larger and darker, with a more extensive black and white neck patch that often extends further onto the breast. The rufous scaling on the back is typically darker and more pronounced. Its call is also a purring 'turrr-turrr-turrr' but often deeper and more guttural. Its range is primarily eastern Asia.
