Sylvia curruca

Key differences

The Lesser Whitethroat has a darker grey head, darker ear coverts, and lacks the rufous wing panels of the Common Whitethroat. Its song is a distinctive, rattling 'rattle-rattle-rattle' followed by a short, sweet warble, very different from the Common Whitethroat's scratchy song. It also has a darker eye with no prominent pale orbital ring.

Garden Warbler

Sylvia borin

Key differences

The Garden Warbler is plainer, lacking the grey head and white throat of the Common Whitethroat. It is uniformly brownish-olive above and buffy-white below. Its song is a rich, melodious, and sustained warble, much more musical than the Common Whitethroat's. It also lacks the rufous wing panels.

Dartford Warbler

Sylvia undata

The Dartford Warbler is smaller, darker, and has a much longer tail. Males have a dark grey head and back, reddish-brown underparts, and a red eye-ring.
