Savannas and Grasslands
Look in open, dry savannas and grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs, particularly those dominated by acacia or mopane.
Agricultural Areas
Often found in cultivated lands and areas near human habitation where food sources (seeds) are abundant.
Water Sources
They frequently visit waterholes, rivers, and dams to drink, especially in dry periods.
Old Nests
During the breeding season, search for them around the old nests of weavers, particularly Sociable Weavers, as they utilize these for nesting.
Field tips
- Scan the ground. Red-headed Finches are primarily ground feeders, so scan open patches of ground, especially where there are grass seeds.
- Look for flocks. They are highly social and often found in flocks, sometimes mixed with other finch species. Look for groups moving together.
- Visit waterholes. In dry areas, waterholes are excellent places to observe them, especially in the morning or late afternoon.
- Listen for calls. Their soft 'tseep' contact calls can help locate foraging flocks.
- Check old weaver nests. If you are in an area with Sociable Weavers, inspect their large communal nests, as Red-headed Finches often nest within them.
Migration
Generally resident, but may undertake local nomadic movements in response to rainfall and food availability, particularly in arid regions.
