The Cut-throat Finch (Amadina fasciata) is the only other species in the genus Amadina. Males have a distinctive red band across the throat, rather than a fully red head. Females are similar to Red-headed Finch females but lack the prominent black scaling on the flanks and have a less distinct white rump. The Cut-throat Finch also has a more northerly distribution in Africa.
