Eurasian Teal song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Eurasian Teal, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The male's call is a distinctive, high-pitched, clear 'krick-krick' or 'cree-cree', often repeated. This is the origin of its common name in many languages.

Calls

Females have a softer, quacking 'quack' or 'rraap' call, similar to a Mallard but much weaker and higher-pitched. Both sexes emit alarm calls when startled.

When they vocalize

Males call frequently during courtship and throughout the breeding season. Females call more often when disturbed or with young. Calls can be heard year-round, but are most prominent in spring.
