Interior western North America, from eastern Oregon and Idaho south through Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, western Texas, and into northern Mexico.
Preferred environments

Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands
These dry, open woodlands are prime habitat, especially in the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain states.

In drier, interior chaparral regions, they can be found among dense shrubs.

Occasionally found along streams or washes that provide denser vegetation within arid landscapes.
Field tips
- Listen for Calls. Their harsh, scolding calls are often the first indication of their presence. They are quite vocal, especially when agitated or communicating.
- Look for Movement in Shrubs. They are active foragers, often hopping on the ground or through dense shrubs. Look for movement in the understory.
- Observe Caching Behavior. Watch for them burying acorns or other seeds, a common and distinctive behavior.
- Visit Appropriate Habitats. Focus your search in the specific dry, scrubby, or open woodland habitats they prefer, particularly in the interior western states.
- Be Patient and Quiet. While often bold, they can also be wary. Patience and quiet observation will increase your chances of a good sighting.
Migration
Primarily a resident species throughout its range. Some altitudinal migration may occur in mountainous regions, with birds moving to lower elevations during harsh winter conditions.
