Calls

A variety of harsh, scratchy calls, including a distinctive 'shreeeeenk' or 'jaaaay' call, often repeated. Also produces a rapid, chattering 'check-check-check' alarm call and softer 'whick-whick' contact notes. Calls are generally less varied and often harsher than those of the California Scrub-Jay.
