Birds to compare

Pacific Parakeet

Eupsittula strenua

Key differences

Formerly considered a subspecies of the Orange-fronted Parakeet, the Pacific Parakeet (E. strenua) is now recognized as a distinct species. It is very similar in appearance but generally larger, with a slightly duller orange forehead and a more extensive blue crown. Its range is restricted to the Pacific slope of southern Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas) and Guatemala. Field identification can be challenging without direct comparison or knowledge of precise locality.

Olive-throated Parakeet

Eupsittula nana

Key differences

The Olive-throated Parakeet lacks the prominent orange forehead and blue crown. It has a duller green head and a more yellowish-green throat and breast. Its calls are also distinct.

Brown-throated Parakeet

Eupsittula pertinax

Key differences

The Brown-throated Parakeet has a distinctive brown throat and cheeks, and a yellowish-orange forehead, but lacks the blue crown of the Orange-fronted Parakeet. Its range is also largely separate, occurring further south in South America and parts of the Caribbean.
