Key differences
The Least Bittern is significantly smaller (about half the size) and has a more rufous plumage with a prominent black cap and back (in males). Its flight is more direct and less lumbering. The American Bittern lacks the distinct black cap and is much larger.
Green Heron

The Green Heron is smaller, darker, and has a greenish-black cap and back, with chestnut neck and sides. It often perches in trees or shrubs over water, unlike the American Bittern which stays hidden in dense marsh vegetation. The Green Heron's neck is shorter and thicker, and its bill is darker.
