Song

The most distinctive vocalization is the 'pumping' or 'throbbing' song of the male, often described as 'oong-ka-choonk' or 'pump-er-lunk'. It sounds like a wooden pump or a stake being driven into mud. This low-pitched, resonant call can carry for long distances.

Calls

Other calls include a harsh 'harrr' or 'kwaak' when flushed, and various grunts and croaks around the nest.

When they vocalize

The male's pumping song is most frequently heard during the breeding season, particularly at dawn and dusk, but can also be heard at night.
