Little Heron look-alikes

Key differences

The Green Heron, found in the Americas, is often considered conspecific with the Little Heron or a very closely related sister species. Distinguishing features are subtle: Green Herons typically have a more rufous neck and breast, and often lack the distinct pale streaking on the back feathers seen in many Little Heron subspecies. The lores of Green Herons are often brighter yellow-orange. Field identification can be challenging where ranges might overlap or in areas with intermediate forms.

Key differences

While also a small heron, the Rufous-backed Night Heron is stockier, has a much shorter neck, and a distinctive rufous back and wings with a black cap. It is primarily nocturnal, unlike the largely diurnal Little Heron. Its bill is thicker and darker, and its legs are duller.

Larger and stockier than the Little Heron, with a black cap and back, grey wings, and white underparts. It has prominent white head plumes during breeding. Like the Rufous-backed, it is largely nocturnal. Its posture is more hunched, and its bill is thicker.
