Field tips
- Listen for calls. Their distinctive 'chi-CA-go-go' call is often the first indication of their presence, especially in the morning or late afternoon.
- Look for coveys. Gambel's Quail are social and usually found in groups. Scan the ground near dense cover for movement.
- Check near water. They need regular access to water, so focus your search around water sources like springs, ponds, or even bird baths in desert environments.
- Be patient and quiet. They are wary birds. Move slowly and quietly, and use binoculars to scan for movement in dense vegetation.
