Gambel's Quail song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Gambel's Quail, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The male's advertising call, often given from an elevated perch, is a loud, accelerating 'chi-CA-go-go' or 'ka-KAA-ka-ka'. This call serves to attract mates and announce territory.

Calls

A variety of calls, including a soft 'whisk-whisk-whisk' contact call used by coveys to stay together, and an alarm call, a sharp 'quit-quit-quit' or 'pip-pip-pip', given when startled. Chicks emit soft peeping sounds.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (spring and early summer) and when coveys are forming or moving. Alarm calls can be heard year-round when disturbed.
